Common Wedding Rituals in the USA
Being a country of different cultural races, there is a great variety of wedding styles in the United States.
However, the majority of weddings nowadays still follow a number of traditions. One of the traditions dating back to
the nineteenth century is about what a bride should wear on her wedding day. It is commonly believed that on her
wedding day, the bride should carry with her ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, and something
blue’. This is because each of these things has a special meaning for the bride on this big day.
When the bride wears ‘something old’, it reminds her of her family and the past. Thus, some bride may wear
her mother’s wedding dress or a piece of her jewellery.
‘Something new’ that the bride wears means good luck and hope for a happy future with her husband. This new
item is usually a pair of new shoes, or can be a wedding dress or something else.
When the bride wears ‘something borrowed’, it symbolizes the help and support she gets from her friends and
her family whenever she needs it. An example of ‘something borrowed’ can be a married friend’s bridal veil or a
friend’s handkerchief.
‘Something blue’ means trust and faith between the bride and the groom. Nowadays, some brides are creative
with this item. For example, they may have their fingernails painted blue. Nevertheless, the most popular blue item is
the garter that the bride wears on her leg.
Things are changing fast these day; however, the rituals about what the bride should wear on her wedding day
remain kept strictly by a lot of women in the USA.

Part 1:
The Amish weddings
Today, I will talk about the Amish weddings. Most Pennylvania Amish weddings take place from late
October through December. Traditionally, they are help on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so there is time in
between to get ready for and clean up after each. Even so, it can get pretty busy during the ‘wedding season’,
with some Amish going to two or three weddings in one day!
While parents do not select who their children will marry, approval must be given. The couple planning to
marry are announced at a church service. The wedding service itself, help in the home of the bride’s parents.
After the service, the benches are put together to form tables for the wedding meal for about 200 - 300 guests.
In the afternoon, the young people enjoy singing, and after that those who have stayed through the day join
the evening meal.
After spending the night at the bride’s home, the next day the newlv-weds help with the clean-up from the day
before. The couple then spends upcoming weekends visiting relatives, sometimes stopping at five or six
houses between a Friday and Sunday night. Wedding gifts are usually given to them at this time. By the next
spring, the couple is usually ready to move into a home of their own, and the groom will begin growing his
beard. This is an Amish tradition that signifies a man is married.
Part 2:
Wedding in Vietnam
T: Can you tell me something about the wedding ceremony in Vietnam?
T.G : Well, wedding is very important to the Vietnamese, not only to the couple involved but also for both
families. The wedding day is usually chosen by the groom’s parents.
T: What does the groom’s family do on the wedding day?
T.G: On the wedding day, the groom’s family and relatives go to the bride’s house bringing gifts wrapped in
red papers. Those who hold the trays of gifts are also carefully chosen.
T: Do you have the Master of Ceremonies? And what does he do during ihe wedding ceremony?
T.G: The Master of Ceremonies introduces thc groom, the bride, the parents, the relatives and guests of the
two families. The wedding ceremony starts in front of the altar. The bride and the groom would pray, asking
their ancestors’ permission to be married. The Master of Ceremonies would give the wedding couple advice
on starting a new family. The groom and the bride then exchange their wedding rings.
T: Where is the wedding banquet held?
T.G: Well, it depends. Often the wedding banquet is scheduled at the groom or bride’s home or at a
restaurant and all close relatives, friends and neighbours are invited.
T: What kind of food and drinks are served? Traditional food and beer or wine are. During the reception, the
groom and bride and their parents stop by each table to thank their guests. The guests, in return, will give
envelopes containing wedding cards and money gifts to the newly wedded couples alone with their blessings.
T: Oh. That’s very interesting. Thank you.
T.G: You’re welcome.
