II. READING COMPREHENSION
Engineers have to know the best and most economical materials to use. They must also
understand the properties of these materials and how they can be worked. There are two
kinds of materials used in engineering- metals and non-metals. We can divide metals into
ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The former contains iron and the latter do not contain iron.
Cast iron and steel, which are both alloys, and mixtures of iron and carbon, are the two most
important ferrous metals. Steel contains a smaller proportion of carbon than cast iron
contains. Certain elements can improve the properties of steel and fight against corrosion.
Aluminum, copper, and the alloy, bronze, and brass, are common ferrous metals.
Plastics and ceramics are non-metals. However, plastics may be machined like metals.
Plastics are classified into two types- thermo-plastics and thermo sets. Thermo-plastics can
be shaped and reshaped by heat and pressure but thermo sets cannot be reshaped because
they undergo chemical changes as they harden. Engineers often employ ceramics when
materials that can withstand high temperature are needed.

strength requirements/ required for certain applications. To overcome this drawback/
disadvantage, alloy is used.
2. In general, alloys are more durable and harder than their parent/ main metals. Alloys are
more malleable (easier to work) and more ductile (easier to pull into strings/ wires)
V. FURTHER READING
Metals and alloys
An alloy is a metal composed of more than one element. Engineering alloys include the cast
irons and steels, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, titanium alloys, nickel alloys, zinc
alloys and copper alloys. The difference between metal elements and alloys is that metal is
made up of only one element and alloy is a mixture of metals, or metal and non-metal. For
example brass is an alloy which is made up of copper and zinc- two different elements. Both
alloy and metal are good conductors of heat, but alloy has a relatively high melting point
when compared to that of metals.
If there is a typical engineering material that is associated in the public‟s minds with modern
engineering practice, it is structural steel. This versatile construction material has several
characteristics, or properties, that we consider metallic: (1) It is strong and can be readily
formed into practical shapes. (2) Its extensive, permanent deformability, or ductility, is an
important asset in permitting small amounts of yielding to sudden and severe loads. Many
Californians have been able to observe moderate earthquake activities that leaves windows
(of relatively brittle glass) cracked while steel support framing still functions normally. (3) A
freshly cut steel surface has a characteristic with other metallic luster and (4) a steel bar
shares a fundamental characteristic with other metals: it is a good conductor of electric
current.

II. READING COMPREHENSION
We can describe a force only by its effects. It cannot be measured directly like a length. A
force can start something moving. If we push against a small object, it moves. A force can
also stop something moving or hinder motion. If we brake a moving car, it will slow down
and eventually stop. And if we suspend a heavy mass from a copper wire, it will extend,
showing that a force can stretch a body. Force may also compress, bend or even break an
object. A force can be one of attraction. The force of attraction exerted by the huge mass of
the earth is called gravity. If we pick up a stone, then release it, it will fall to the ground
because of gravitational force. Gravity is an example of a natural force. Whether a force
naturally or deliberately exerted on it, it cannot exist by itself. Force must occur in pairs,
never in isolation. When a force acts on a rigid body, it will be balanced by an equal reaction
force which acts in the opposite direction. If a man stands on a slippery surface and brings a
force to bear on a heavy load, the reaction force makes him slide backwards. Similarly, if a
man fires a rifle, the force which pushes the bullet forwards will be matched by the force
which makes the gun push backwards against his shoulder.
Task 1: Read the text and answer the following questions:

rigid body.
Task 2: Read the text again and find out the words which are closest in meaning with the
words in italics:
1. A heavy mass may extend a copper wire. - stretch

IV. TRANSLATION
Task 1: Translate the sentences into Vietnamese
A force is a push or pull upon an object resulting from the object's interaction with another
object. Whenever there is an interaction between two objects, there is a force upon each of
the objects. When the interaction ceases, the two objects no longer experience the force.
Forces only exist as a result of an interaction.
Task 2: Translate the sentences into English
Earth's gravity acts on objects that have mass and make them fall to the ground. Gravity also
helps bind the material to form Earth, the sun and other celestial bodies; otherwise objects
would not be linked together, and life as we know it today would not exist.
V. FURTHER READING
GRAVITY
A force of attraction exists in the human body in the universe. Many scientists including
Galileo and Newton have investigated it. This gravitation force depends on the mass of the
bodies involved. Normally, it is very small but when one of the bodies is a planet, like the
earth, the force is considerable. Everything on or near the surface of the earth is attracted by
the mass of the earth. The greater the mass, the earth‟s force on it will be greater. We call
this force of attraction gravity.
Because of gravity, bodies have weight. We can perceive only when a body resists gravity.
For example, when we pick up a stone, there will be appearance of two forces. One is lifting
force we exert and the other is the force of gravity which attracts the stone downwards and
thus gives it weight. When a body escapes the influence of the earth‟s gravitational pull, it
can become „weightless‟. One of the minor disadvantages of weightless is that normal pen
will not write because the ink is not attracted by gravity to flow out the pen. Gravity differs
slightly from place to place because of the shape of the earth. It is the greatest at the poles
and the weakest at the equator.

II. READING COMPREHENSION
When one surface moves over another one, a force is set up which resists the movement.
This force always opposes motion is called friction. It exists in every machine. It can be
reduced by lubrication and never completely removed. In general, the force opposing motion
is slightly greater before one surface starts moving over another surface than after the
movement has started. This slightly greater force is called static friction. The force keeps
one surface moving over another one is also known as sliding friction. Static friction is
greater than sliding friction.
The value of sliding friction depends on the nature of the two surfaces which touch each
other and the degree to which they are pressed together. Thus, friction between two rough
planks can be lessened if they become smooth. Sliding friction is independent of the area of
surface in contact. In theory, a small brake pad will exert as much braking force as a large
one of a greater surface area. In practice, a small pad will wear down more quickly and
therefore is not used. Another rule of friction should be noted. We can make the normal
reaction between two surfaces in contact by doubling the mass carried by one surface. If we
do so, we shall find that sliding friction is also halved. If we halved the mass carried, sliding
friction would be also halved. This shows that sliding friction is proportional to the reaction
between the surfaces in contact.

IV. TRANSLATION
Task 1: Translate the sentences into Vietnamese
Friction is the resistance of motion when one object rubs against another. Friction force also
exists when there is no motion. Interestingly, the friction constant of the objects at rest is
higher than the friction constant of the sliding objects.
You all experience the static friction in daily life. The amount of the static friction is equal to
the amount that you apply and the direction is opposite to the direction of the motion.
Task 2: Translate the sentences into English
V. FURTHER READING
FRICTION AND PREVENTING FRICTION
Friction is a great help to us. After all, we would all just be sliding around everywhere if
there wasn't friction to keep us steady. Friction is used in car brakes, when we walk or climb
a hill, making a fire, skiing down a hill, and more. There are two main factors that will
influence the total amount of friction: 1) the roughness of the surfaces (or the "coefficient of
friction") and 2) the force between the two objects.
In some cases we want to prevent friction so it's easier to move. A good example of this is a
ball or wheel. They roll to help reduce friction. Another way to reduce friction is with a
lubricant like grease or oil. Machines and engines use grease and oil to reduce friction and
wear so they can last longer. Another way to reduce friction is to change the types of
materials in contact with one another. For example, ice contacting with steel would produce
less friction than rubber would on concrete. This is why ice skates slide so easily on the ice,
but you don't slip when wearing rubber shoes on the sidewalk. These different materials are
said to have different "coefficients of friction".

II. READING COMPREHENSION
Friction in machine causes loss of power. Twenty percent of the power of a motorcar is
wasted in overcoming friction. Engineers, therefore, try to reduce friction as much as
possible by good designs. They can also use material with a low coefficient of friction for
devices such as bearings. The third method used for reducing friction is lubrication.
